South Wirral Art Society

Demonstration of Batik on the 10th January 2012.

Sue Sercombe

Sue is a fully qualified textile tutor in machine embroidery working in paper and fabrics dividing her time between teaching, demonstrating and exhibiting. This workshop introduced  the members to the world of Batik which is a form of paper and fabric decoration dating back to the 4th century  originating in the far east specifically in Indonesia where it is now  a multi- million dollar industry  extending throughout  the region to Japan, India, Malaysia and China.

Today the appeal is for clothing, furniture coverings and wall hangings. Barrak Obama and Nelson Mandela (and now SWAS) are amongst its devotees.

  •  The techniques were new to most members, and were more than appreciative of being able to get hands on practice with the wax resist, painting and hot iron activities. Members were highly delighted with their results, and not much ended in the waste paper basket

    .

  • Sue only spent a little time talking, preferring to get everyone involved as soon as, and as much, as possible. Members, without exception, all were extremely pleased about the practical element to this demonstration.

The evening was a complete success and the perfect start for the 2012 Society programme with thanks to Sue for effort she put in preparation for the occasion.
